Greetings!
Pretty sure I bought my original pattern back when I was in high school and that was around a decade ago so.... Yep.
One of my goals for this year was to make up the coat pattern out of this gorgeous wool fabric I found in Spotlight on clearance ($10/m! Down from $40ish!) this year. Problem with my original pattern was once I'd looked at the measurements required... My current measurements are a little too large for the largest size included (it's a size 6-8-10 pattern). While I liked it... If I could find a cheap pattern that I liked that would fit I'd make that instead.
Thanks to a fabric shop closing down (which is really unfortunate, but I got some great bargains, which you'll see soon), I got that new pattern, which is the Burda Young 6921 pattern.
This series has 2 main points:
1) to get me to finish the damn coat before winter actually ends (...and I'm in Brisbane. I literally have been wearing a coat between around 6am and 10am)
2) to document my first ever coat, to look back on or hopefully inspire someone to give a coat a go!
I'm giving myself 4 weeks to finish it (including this one), part 5'll be my official review of the pattern.
Let's get into week one!
Cutting out.
Lining (satin Charmeuse) was easy to cut, did it across 2 days because I'd just finished batch cutting with scissors and oh the pain.
It took me 24 hours to cut my wool out. I've never been more terrified to cut out a pattern, I had 2.5m of fabric, for the version I wanted I apparently needed 2.8m. And I wanted to pattern match (the pink lines. Haven't really pattern matched much before).
24 hours after I posted that photo, I cut. And had leftovers. So excited.
Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday
Came home from work, ate dinner, went to bed.
Friday
BUTTONS! Bought them. I was the crazy lady sitting on the floor of my local Lincraft with a swatch of fabric putting buttons on it. Which I forgot to save the pic for. I am good blogger.
Omg, I'd forgotten how slippery the lining is. Wooooorst. Also nearly ran over a few pins, they're kind of invisible in the fuzz of the wrong side of outer fabric. Any suggestions?!? I'm kind of lost.
FWAAAAAA one of the instructions without a step (and without extra markings on the pattern) is the one I ruin. Sewed the side back pieces on the wrong side... Hindsight, stupid mistake. So glad I basted it...
Saturday
Sewed up all the outer pieces together. I squee'd when I saw it on my dress form (had to grab dinner out of the oven), as it looks like a coat now. So excited.

Damn collar. So confused, re-read the instructions many a time, looked at the illustrations. Not helpful >.> Please bear in mind I've never made a lapel before. Done collars, but not one with a lapel. I Googled, I tried to pin the pieces the way they were asking... Still nothing. Then I stumbled across the Closet Case Patterns tutorial for the Caroline PJ's (which I do mean to buy eventually).
...I forgot a pattern piece.
"Facing" is not "lining", Christine.
So I'd sewed the back & front lining pieces together at the shoulder seams rather than the facing. Turns out, I'd also forgotten to interface the front facings. Apparently I didn't have enough interfacing left. Off to Spotlight I go tomorrow... sigh.
Sunday
More interfacing acquired, easily. Successfully made it out of Spotlight without any extra fabric (I was looking for some non-directional fabric that would look great as a circle skirt. If you can think of any, feel free to enable ;) ) I totally went shopping on The Remnant Warehouse website for some more though. (Samples were bought, plus more fabric for my second one of this coat)
Got the under collar attached, easy enough. This facing + top collar is doing my head in. Going to create something quick and easy (might finish my mostly done Astoria) because I need to decompress after that. (edit: I ended up playing Roller Coaster Tycoon).
